Join us on a joint event with Sandy Bay Historical Society as we explore the heart of historic Dogtown, once a home to a vibrant community!
From our starting point at the main entrance to Dogtown, we will walk up Dogtown Road and get a close-up view of cellar holes and marker stones of more than a dozen early Dogtown houses, and see the spot where James Merry met his sad fate.
We will pass through "Dogtown Square" and catch a glimpse of hidden boulders and cellars along the Moraine Trail, then follow a loop that will bring us to the Babson Boulder Trail, a treasure trove of Roger Babson's inspirational messages carved in stone.
This walk is approximately 2.5 miles and will take two hours, at a leisurely pace. See a map of the route HERE. The terrain is rocky and uneven, but overall is considered "easy" for able walkers who are comfortable on woodland trails.
The hike will be led by Phil Schwarz and Monica Lawton, who also lead the monthly “Sunday Morning Hikes” for Cape Ann Trail Stewards, which continues a local tradition that dates back more than 40 years (many will remember when these hikes were led by outdoor enthusiast Ted Tarr). Phil also serves on the CATS Board of Directors, and Monica leads history tours of Dogtown as a docent for Cape Ann Museum.
Meeting Spot: We will meet at the main entrance to Dogtown off of Cherry St. in Gloucester. Click HERE for a map of the location and to get directions. There is a small parking lot about 1/4 mile up Dogtown Road on the right. If this is full, park along the right side of the road, past the lot.
Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early in order to be ready for the group's 10 am departure. The hike will depart promptly at 10 am.
Dress comfortably for the weather, and wear appropriate hiking footwear. Bring water, as well as snacks, sunscreen and bug spray as needed. Hiking poles are also highly recommended, if you use them. No dogs, please!
