OUR primary GOAL IS TO CREATE AND support ACCESS TO TRAILS ON CAPE ANN. |
Cape Ann Trail Stewards was formed as a nonprofit in 2013, and we have been helping to maintain hundreds of miles of trails on Cape Ann through coordinating, organizing, and managing thousands of hours of volunteer work, including trimming of brush, blazing of specific colored trail routes for easier access and navigation by the public, trash pickup, boardwalk permitting and installation, graffiti removal, invasive species control, and other activities.
While we do not acquire or own any property ourselves, there are thousands of acres of municipal-owned open space on Cape Ann, and we work on behalf of and in partnership with the municipalities which have limited resources to monitor and maintain this land and the many trails that exist on it. Our primary role as an organization is to help municipal and other local conservation landowners by maintaining these trails, while actively working to make the trail network more accessible to a wider range of the community.
We partner and collaborate with many local groups and organizations, including the Rockport Rights of Way Committee, the Gloucester Open Space and Recreation Committee, Essex County Trail Association, Greenbelt, the Trustees of Reservations, Manchester Essex Conservation Trust, New England Forestry Foundation, Mass Audubon, as well as other municipal departments and committees. We regularly engage in joint projects and have submitted many letters of advocacy on behalf of our partners in support of trail protection, land protection, and funding for trail improvements and access.
